Mammograms, at What Age and How Often
What is recommended in Switzerland and when an earlier exam makes sense.
In Switzerland, regular mammograms for early detection are recommended starting at age 50. In the cantonal screening programs, women between 50 and 70 are invited every two years, and in some cantons up to age 74. Cantonal Screening Programs at a Glance
Under 50 and without symptoms, a routine mammogram is usually not planned, partly because the tissue of younger women is often dense. With an elevated or family risk, things look different: in that case earlier and more frequent screening can make sense, sometimes supplemented by ultrasound or a breast MRI. This is discussed individually. Living with Elevated Risk
The mammogram is the most important method of early detection, because it can reveal even the smallest changes that are not yet possible to feel.
