Breast Reconstruction
Options for rebuilding the breast after a mastectomy.
After a mastectomy, reconstruction is possible if that is what you want. It is your decision, and there is no right or wrong.
There are basically two paths. With implant based reconstruction, a silicone or saline implant is placed. With reconstruction using your own tissue, tissue from another part of your body is used. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages that are discussed individually with you.
Reconstruction can be done at the same time as the tumor surgery or later. Some women also deliberately choose not to have reconstruction. What matters is that you can take your time, stay well informed, and choose what feels right for you.
