
It is the question I hear most often in the consultation room. And the answer is pleasantly small.
0.4
That is how many millisieverts you receive during a mammogram. Four tenths, or 400 microsieverts. That is the complete examination, not a single image.
The number on its own tells you nothing, of course. Millisievert is not a unit we have a feel for. Nobody ever says the weather is particularly millisieverty today.
So let us translate it into something you know.
A weekend in the mountains
The higher you go, the less the atmosphere shields you from cosmic radiation. Spending a weekend above 2000 metres puts you in the same order of magnitude as a mammogram.
Two days of mountain air, sun on your skin, a coffee on the terrace with a view across the peaks. None of us gives radiation a second thought.
Flying is similar. Up in the air you receive more than you do on the ground. A few holiday flights add up to roughly where a mammogram sits.
And here is the interesting part
We book a flight and look forward to it. We drive into the mountains and breathe out. In both cases the radiation is real. It simply does not occupy us, because we know exactly what we are accepting it for.
With a mammogram it is the other way around. Many women think of the radiation first and only afterwards of what the examination actually makes possible.
And that is the good part: a mammogram can make a change visible long before anyone could feel it. At a point where treatment is gentle and the outlook is good. No mountain weekend and no flight can do that.
Why you find very different numbers online
Search for it and you will find values far apart from each other. That is not a contradiction, it is usually a mix up.
There are two units of measurement. One measures how much energy arrives in the breast tissue itself. The other measures what that means for the whole body. In a mammogram only the breast is examined, not the thyroid, not the bowel, not the bone marrow. That is why the second value comes out much smaller.
On top of that, many figures online still date from the era of film mammography. Today's digital machines need considerably less.
Why yours might differ slightly
The 0.4 is a guide value. Two things shift it a little.
Your tissue. Denser breast tissue needs slightly more radiation for the image to be genuinely useful. The machine adjusts for this automatically, you do not have to do anything.
The compression. The part nobody enjoys is the part working in your favour. Flatter tissue needs less radiation for a better image. Those few seconds pay off twice.
What the experts say
The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health rates the risk of a mammogram as minimal when set against natural background radiation and the diagnostic benefit. The Swiss Cancer League puts it briefly: the amount of radiation is very small, and the benefit outweighs it.
That is not reassurance for its own sake. It is the result of decades of calculation. The benefit exceeds the risk many times over, and the arithmetic gets clearer with every generation of equipment.
What is worth taking with you
Asking about radiation is a good question. It shows you are looking closely rather than simply going along.
And it has an answer that turns out smaller than expected. A mammogram is a weekend in the mountains. A few holiday flights. And it is the only one of those that can tell you something about your health.
Knowledge changes the way you look at things. And with the right scale, a worry becomes simply an appointment.
